Do you know what curl is? If so, buy this kettle, everything else sucks

"So I had written a less-glowing review of this unit (I have the Studio Edition) since my lid managed to somehow break itself and fall into the water one day — and the slow refresh rate on the display seems inexcusable even if this unit is driven by an ESP32 inside it — and of course the apparent lack of comprehensive remote scheduling made me sad. I'd just about given up on this thing, when in a moment of reverse-engineering optimism I discovered that it actually has a very detailed, very complete remote control and status query interface on it that works just fine over the network, but is otherwise completely undocumented. In exploring this interface, I reversed the PID controller it uses for water heating, and discovered there's actually a tremendous amount of engineering skill that went into the heating logic itself, and this kettle (in spite of the terrible refresh on the status screen) is now my current favourite kitchen appliance. This is basically the ultimate hacker-friendly, fully-automation-friendly kettle that manages to get very close to the set temperatures and you can just not even bother looking at the irritating display because you won't find this kind of kettle basically anywhere else without risking burning your house down. But the lid is pretty garbage-y. Somehow they spent all their engineering budget on the firmware design and skipped out on the "lid will last" department."

Great Kettle overall with some flaws

"This is a feature rich kettle and the most advanced electric kettle I have used. This is the flagship model with all the bells and whistles. I went with the regular handle (as opposed to wood) and I am not regretting that choice. The handle is comfortable and does not get hot. Even when both the handle and my hand were wet, I had a good grip on it. The kettle comes with a nice, glass covered base, and it comes with a bunch of programmable features. The Good: 1. I love that it can not only hold a temperature but that the length of time that temperature will be held is programable. 2. There is a feature to set your altitude because that will affect the boiling temperature of water. The kettle does not detect this altitude, so you must google your location or measure that some other way. 3. Temperature can be set in half degree increments in Celsius and there is an option to change setting to a “Guide Mode” as well. The guide mode is a really cool feature which has a few preset temperatures (Green/White Tea 82°C/ Aeropress 90. 5°C/ French Press 93°C/ Pourover 96°C/ Black Tea aka Boil 100°C or less if your altitude won’t let water reach 100°C). If guide mode is enabled, you cannot set the kettle to temperatures that are not the settings I listed above. This is a neat feature but keep in mind that if you don’t like it, you can disable it. In fact, it’s off by default. 4. There are also setting to change the language, change the temperature from C to F, set the clock, and also a scheduling function which while I don’t personally use at the moment, I can see the value of it for some people. The Neutral: 1. Wifi connectivity. This kettle can connect to Wifi apparently and receive upgrades. It requires using an app on your phone. This feature can be turned off. Mine works well out of the box and I don’t see the need for this feature at all, but nowadays everything is “smart” I guess. I’d be more concerned with a potential security breach through it, as I am not sure how well secured such a device would be on my network but since I don’t know these answers, and the kettle works fine without it, I disabled this option. The Bad: For such an expensive kettle (Over $300 CAD) I would expect an almost flawless kettle. This is by far the most expensive electric kettle I have ever owned and when I bought it, I said “buy once, cry once”. I don’t regret my decision overall, but there are some absolutely baffling design decisions with this kettle that had me take off a star. I’d like to take off a star and a half if I could, as 2 stars is too much. Here we go: 1. While there is a line demarcating the maximum fill (900ml), there are no other gradations on the kettle at all. It comes off as lazy. There is no way to know if you want to just boil 500ml or 250ml how much water you added without measuring it in another container or simply eyeballing it. This is absolutely inexcusable for a $300+ product. I have owned many kettles (although not goose neck kettles, as this is my first of this kind) and they all had this feature. This includes sub $50 kettles from Walmart and Canadian Tire. Given the mass production nature of this kettle, all it would have taken was a few laser etchings which would have cost pennies, to add some gradations. This is a basic feature and for me by far the biggest con. 2. The bottom of the kettle is NOT flat. Again, a baffling design choice. The kettle has a raised central portion inside it, with a very narrow trench running all around the edge (see picture). The trench is too small to fit even my fingers, and this will make cleaning more difficult. “But you are only boiling water” you say. True. But when scale builds up, it sometimes requires more than just chemicals and scrubbing the inside of that trench will be very difficult. 3. The speaker is VERY quiet. It advertises and even allows the setting of how loud the base beeps when the water has reached the designated temperature. There is a setting from 1 to 10. The loudest setting is barely audible. The sound the water makes in the kettle as it boils literally drowns out this beep. Unless you are close by, this feature might as well not exist. Why add this feature without a proper speaker? Again, I have used cheaper kettles which beeped loud enough to be heard in the next room. In case you are wondering I don’t have hearing loss. So overall, it’s a feature rich kettle with more positives than negatives but there are some disappointing aspects to it. I hope this review will help other with their decision. I know I will get many years out of this kettle. It looks and feels great, and there are some great quality of life features I didn’t even know I wanted. Givens the cons listed however, I don’t feel Fellow should charge as much for it."

"This kettle is a high quality product. I liked the option to keep the water at the temperature I want for 15 minutes (enough for me). The control when pouring water on the coffee is excellent. I just press 1 button and the boiling starts."

    Very Pleased

"The kettle really has some great features, and is very well thought-out and ergonomically successful. Its software had a hiccup after updating , and changed the time by 4 hours. I reset it, and it hasn’t had any problem since. I’m very happy with it."

It helped to begin my v60 journey

"Being an espresso enthusiast for a long time I never paid attention to pour over techniques. One day I tried a cup of gesha brewed using v60 method and I was hooked on. The kettle choice was easy, Fellow EKG Pro Studio mainly due to its reputation, durability and look. Perfect match for my black Lelit Bianca. After 3 months I still love it and use it several times a day. Strongly recommend it."

    Great kettle

"I love my new kettle, the glass and metal base with the color screen looks amazing, the features are complete and it works perfectly. On top of that Cafuné was amazing to deal with, I had questions and they answered every one of them with great details and explanations. The package I received looked more like a christmas gift than a package and they even put in a free coffee bag. Overall, I`m super happy with my purchase!"
