THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS
Born out of necessity, the Group Glass from Craig Lyn Design Studio is an adjustable viewing mirror for monitoring espresso shot extractions with a bottomless portafilter.
Simple and elegant in its design, the gently curved 65mm mirror frame of the Group Glass is held securely to a polished steel ball with a strong neodymium magnet, allowing it to be quickly and easily reoriented to suit any viewing angle.
Detachable from its sturdy base, with an oleophobic coating for greater ease of cleaning, the Group Glass is an indispensable tool as you continue your journey down the espresso rabbit hole.
FEATURES
No more bending or crouching; monitor your extraction from a naked portafilter with the help of a mirror.
Gently curved 65mm mirror frame draws design inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright's SC Johnson Administration Building and its columns reminiscent of lily pads.
Mirror is secured to a polished steel ball with a strong neodymium magnet within an inwardly flared scallop, allowing for complete adjustability to suit any viewing angle.
Detachable from base, the mirror contains an oleophobic coating for greater ease of cleaning any coffee splatter.
Made to be quickly adjustable; for greater resistance when adjusting, rub candle wax on the rear of the mirror frame where it comes in contact with the sphere.

Reimagined from top to bottom with a clear focus on the fundamental design elements that translate to improved grind performance and a more enjoyable experience, the HG-1 PRIME introduces a 2.5:1 gear ratio and extended lever arm for easier grinding, and a shortened shaft design with improved tolerances and runout for enhanced grind uniformity.
Alongside the removal of the flywheel in favour of a more compact frame, the HG-1 PRIME is designed to fit beneath most cabinets and is more easily moved than its predecessor.
From the ground up, the HG-1 PRIME features a surface mountable and simplified base with cutout to centre the dosing tumbler or shaker funnel beneath the chute, with the same vertical grind path and minimal surface contact that produce the ultra-low retention that has always been a hallmark of Craig Lyn's iconic design.
Easy to clean with no special tools required, and featuring an exterior ring micro-stepped adjustment with vertical progressions of just 0.013mm per setting, the HG-1 PRIME delivers high performance and precision grounded in practicality.
At the heart of any grinder are its burrs, and the HG-1 PRIME utilises Mazzer's highly regarded 83mm three phase conical burrs. The largest commercially available conical burrs—designed to excel at slower rpm—they're allowed to truly shine in the elegantly compact HG-1 PRIME.
With the large grinding surface area, low grinding speed, and direct grind path, the HG-1 PRIME maintains excellent thermal stability and yields a fluffy grind with a reputation for producing unparalleled richness and complexity in espresso by way of a highly consistent bimodal grind.
Appreciating the importance and impact of redistribution—reorganising the particle sizes of your grind's distribution into a more homogenous spread—Craig Lyn Design Studios is pleased to offer three specially conceived redistribution & dosing tools for use with the HG-1 PRIME or other grinders:
The Espresso Shaker Funnel I for 58mm baskets; the Espresso Shaker Funnel II for 49mm to 58mm baskets; and the venerable Blind Tumbler for 49mm to 58mm baskets and those who prefer their grind stirred, not shaken.
Like any hand tool, the HG-1 PRIME requires some effort, patience, and skill to operate. It’s a deliberate choice that some gladly make, as it is with opting to drive a manual transmission over automatic, or preferring lever over pump espresso machines.
As a craftsman, it’s up to you to learn to get the most out of your tools in order to achieve the best possible results, and it’s our belief that a hands-on ritual serves to further connect you with your coffee and give you a better understanding of the how and why of pulling a great shot.
We can’t promise you the perfect cup of coffee, but we can help make it easier to achieve with the best available tools.
